Caio César Posted January 5, 2012 at 05:32 PM Share Posted January 5, 2012 at 05:32 PM Os números da correlação com Berlim impressionam, Mafili.

Todos que conversei hoje no msn em Chicago, me diziam a mesma coisa: " I Hope that Greenland block sets up and Winter comes to stay a while!"... Esse texto é do ano passado: Return of the cold block Spring Bummer: Colder Pattern by Jonathan Erdman, Sr. Meteorologist One of the keys to persistent cold in the Central and Eastern U.S. from late fall to early spring can be found in Greenland. Meteorologists track an index called the "North Atlantic Oscillation" (NAO) to help forecast temperature trends over the next two weeks. Simply put, this is an index tracking the strength of low pressure near Iceland and subtropical high pressure in the Atlantic Ocean. When the NAO is negative, upper-level high pressure near Greenland acts as a rock in a stream, blocking cold air from moving east from Canada. Instead, that cold air plunges into the central and eastern U.S. and can lock in sometimes for a few weeks, depending on the strength of the so-called "Greenland block". Tracking the cold with the NAO Graph of NAO Index since late Nov. 2010. Forecast is at far right. | NOAA/CPC The graph above shows the NAO since late November. Note the predominantly negative values from late November through the first 10 days of January. As a result, December was the coldest on record in both Florida and Georgia, according to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Eight other southeast states had their top 10 coldest December on record. From roughly mid-January through the first three weeks of February, the NAO oscillated between weak positive and weak negative values. In other words, the "Greenland block" was not strongly apparent in the weather pattern; cold wasn't locked in. Again according to NCDC, February was either near or warmer than average, for the most part, in the central and eastern U.S. Late February through the first three weeks of March, a positive NAO was in place, meaning cold air tended to drain eastward off Canada instead of plunging deep into the U.S. Now look at the right side of the graph above. This is a forecast for the NAO trending negative over the next 7 days. Let's explore what that means for our weather ahead. Pattern now: Cold lock Forecast weather pattern late this week into next week The negative NAO means the blocking upper ridge near Greenland will be back. But it's not the only player here. A second blocking upper ridge poking well northward into central Canada will join forces with the "Greenland block" to squeeze a persistent dome of cold air in place from the Upper Midwest into the Northeast. The 60s and 70s will be gone until further notice in these areas. Sds.
Silvio Coletty Posted January 5, 2012 at 07:09 PM Share Posted January 5, 2012 at 07:09 PM ESSE ANO A SITUAÇÃO É ESSA: :punish: North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Staying Positive Nope...the Greenland block is not a player right now. A common way to "lock cold air" in the East for an extended period of time is when the jet stream takes a sharp northward turn near Greenland (see image above). This so-called "Greenland block" pattern, well....blocks cold air from draining west to east off Canada. Instead the cold is forced to nosedive deep into the South and East. In the meteorological world I live in, we refer to this as the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). For the most part, what we've experienced since August is the positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation. This prevents any blasts of cold air from "locking in" for a lengthy period of time across the East. This does not mean we can't get outbreaks of arctic air (see this week), it just means when they do arrive, they don't stick around too long. Perhaps you had a family member over the holidays that you wished would do the same? Sds.
