Sua capital é Longyearbyen (Longyear City) e possui aproximadamente 1700 habitantes. Esta é a capital administrativa mais ao norte no mundo (78º N) e, apesar da pequena população, a cidade conta com um Shopping, uma Universidade ( Universidade do Ártico), um cinema,uma escola e um hotel. O aeroporto está a 2 km do centro da cidade. Localização O Aeroporto de Longyearbyen A escola Um "centrinho" comercial A segunda maior cidade do arquipélago é Barentsburg, um assentamento mineiro russo, aqui vive praticamente o resto da população do arquipélago. NESTA LATITUDE, POR LÁ HÁ ATÉ ALGUMA VEGETAÇÃO E NO POLO SUL NÃO CHEGA NEM A TEMPERATURA POSITIVA NO VERÃO, É SÓ UNS 30/40ºC MAIS FRIO.!!
