Tomás,

ENSO: São duas componentes:

Oceano: Basicamente Niño 3.4...EN = El Niño

Atmosfera: SOI: Oscilação Sul.

ENSO = EN + SOI = ENSO.

Eduardo,

Sem problemas.

Tente ler o 'paper' do link.

6. Properties of extratropical cyclones in the SH and AAO phases

Weather in the subtropics and Polar Regions is systematically affected by propagating

extratropical cyclones. For instance, the rainfall regime over southeastern South America during

summer can be influenced by these systems as they modulate the SACZ activity over the

subtropical Atlantic Ocean (Carvalho et al. 2004). In this regard, the previous discussion raised

some important questions: can contrasting AAO phases during DJF modulate properties of

extratropical cyclones in the SH? If so, what properties are most sensitive to these changes? To

objectively address these issues we used an automated procedure developed by Murray and

Simmonds (1991) (hereafter referred to as MS). A thorough discussion on the MS method can be

found in Murray and Simmonds (1991).

Chinese Scientists Claim: Peak Solar Activity Drove 2015/16 El Niño

Chinese Academy of Science physicists find link between solar peaks and strong El Niños

solar-elnino.png

Abstract

Recent SST and atmospheric circulation anomaly data suggest that the 2015/16 El Niño event is quickly decaying. Some researchers have predicted a forthcoming La Niña event in late summer or early fall 2016. From the perspective of the modulation of tropical SST by solar activity, the authors studied the evolution of the 2015/16 El Niño event, which occurred right after the 2014 solar peak year. Based on statistical and composite analysis, a significant positive correlation was found between sunspot number index and El Niño Modoki index, with a lag of two years. A clear evolution of El Niño Modoki events was found within 1–3 years following each solar peak year during the past 126 years, suggesting that anomalously strong solar activity during solar peak periods favors the triggering of an El Niño Modoki event. The patterns of seasonal mean SST and wind anomalies since 2014 are more like a mixture of two types of El Niño (i.e., eastern Pacific El Niño and El Niño Modoki), which is similar to the pattern modulated by solar activity during the years following a solar peak. Therefore, the El Niño Modoki component in the 2015/16 El Niño event may be a consequence of solar activity, which probably will not decay as quickly as the eastern Pacific El Niño component. The positive SST anomaly will probably sustain in the central equatorial Pacific (around the dateline) and the northeastern Pacific along the coast of North America, with a low-intensity level, during the second half of 2016.

- Por um lado, a emissão de gases do efeito estufa pelo homem segue a pleno vapor;

- Por outro, a atividade vulcânica encontra-se estável;

Winter Seasonal Forecast Update. (weatherbell)

October 27, 2016

Extreme cold December possible

Analog technique favors back and forth with leftover colder than normal January/February

Still relatively high uncertainty

Swath of above normal snows over Pacific Northwest to western High Plains and in the Great Lakes and Northeast

Texas, southern Plains and Southeast look milder

Core of cold should stay mainly to the north

December_2016_February_2017_Update.png

Our snowfall forecast has changed, relying on the cold to produce both Lake Effect and large scale storms over the interior Northeast. The big news is that the core of the heaviest snow is back to the northwest but the big cities should be above normal anyway. While there should be a western ridge, there is likely to be enough coming through the ridge to enhance snows in the Pacific Northwest into the High Plains, where we think precipitation will be above normal overall.

Winter_2016_17_Snowfall_Oct.png

Discussion

The WeatherBELL team has settled on the strongest analogs of 1966-67, 1983-84 and 1995-96 with 2013-14 double-weighted and single weights to 1960-61, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2014-15. The pure analog is colder, but to adjust for modeling that is warmer and a more modern climatology, a degree was added across the board.

The analog:

DEC_FEB.png

We think that December has a chance to be very cold, but we are not ready to go the most extreme solution at this time.

December_2016_Update(1).png

December Analog:

DEC(2).png

Things should be fairly seasonable, on average, for January in much of the East:

January_2017(1).png

Analog:

JAN(2).png

I think the mid and late winter will be back and forth, still biased cold over the Northeast, Great Lakes and Midwest.

February_2017.png

Analog:

FEB(1).png

The years in question have an SST pattern like this (every 0.2°C):

prUWtd2C_z.png

We do not believe the La Niña will be this strong, but you can see the warm ring in the Pacific (even with the La Niña seen here) gives a cold result in the analogs. Again, we have adjusted the temperatures up a degree, given the uncertainty. If you combine the pure analogs with the idea the La Niña may be a non issue, you can see an equal chance for a colder and a warmer scenario than we have depicted.

Essentially, we are in the middle but are worried about the kind of major cold we are now seeing in Asia showing up for late November and December.

The current SST analog winds up with this for its SST projection:

casst_anom_2(6).gif

The JMA forecast:

Screen_Shot_2016_10_26_at_7_32_02_PM.png

JAMSTEC:

ssta_glob_DJF2017_1oct2016.gif

The CFSv2 seems to again be trying to push cold to the West Coast and is much stronger with its La Niña forecast:

glbSSTSeaInd2(8).gif

The Euro has a less robust La Niña:

ps2png_atls20_95e2cf679cd58ee9b4db4dd119a05a8d_g7Du4J.png

The WeatherBELL Pioneer model, which takes into account the SSTs but many other variables, has done a great job at 500 mb in recent years. This year there is no Super Niño to distort low level temperatures like last year. The 500 mb for the winter gives us this and looks much like the Euro, which is perhaps a bit farther to the west):

_1(20).png

Temperatures:

_2(10).png

Texas looks to be a major temperature headache, as the battle goes on between the cold that is aimed into the East and the western warmth. I have enough back and forth for a normal winter but am worried it could be warmer there, even as it's colder farther to the northeast.

The Verdict

A colder and snowier winter is on the way for the Great Lakes, Northeast, much of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, with warmth centered in the West. The warmth could also extend across the South. There is a danger of major cold from Thanksgiving to New Year's. As far as later in the winter, we will evaluate that as we get closer. Given the worry about December, it has been made the coldest month, with some backing off in January. February is bound by a greater uncertainty with how far out it is.

Overall in terms of the last 8 seasons, this would be the fifth coldest out of the eight. The worst case it could wind up in the top 3, though. I seriously doubt it would be warmer than the warmest three.

Segundo o NOAA, habemos La Niña

DIAGNOSTIC DISCUSSION

issued by

CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER/NCEP/NWS

and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society

10 November 2016

ENSO Alert System Status: La Niña Advisory

Synopsis: La Niña conditions are present and slightly favored to persist (~55% chance) through winter 2016-17.

La Niña conditions were observed during October, with negative sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in early November stretching across most of the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean [Fig. 1]. With the exception of the Niño1+2 region, the Niño region indices remained negative over the last month, with the latest weekly value of the Niño-3.4 index at -0.8°C [Fig. 2]. The upper-ocean heat content also remained below average during October [Fig. 3], reflecting below-average temperatures at depth [Fig. 4]. Convection was suppressed over the central tropical Pacific and enhanced over Indonesia [Fig. 5]. The lower-level easterly winds were weakly enhanced near and west of the International Date Line, and anomalously westerly upper-level winds were mainly west of the International Date Line. Overall, the ocean and atmosphere system reflected weak La Niña conditions.

November 2016 La Niña update: Hello, lady!

Author: Emily Becker

November 10, 2016

Laninana_zpssqf0zjg3.png

Is the sea surface temperature in the Niño3.4 region more than half a degree cooler than average? Yes! (It was about -0.7°C below average during October.) Do forecasters think it will stay cooler than that threshold for several overlapping three-month periods? Yes! (But just barely.) Finally, are there signs that the atmospheric circulation above the tropical Pacific is stronger than average? Yes! This all means that La Niña has officially arrived. Equanto o NOAA afirmou que temos La Niña, do outro lado do planeta....

BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY

ENSO Wrap-Up

Current state of the Pacific and Indian oceans

6 December 2016 Next issue 20 December 2016

La Niña no longer likely in the coming months

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the tropical Pacific Ocean remains neutral (neither El Niño nor La Niña). Although some very weak La Niña-like patterns continue (such as cooler than normal ocean temperatures and reduced cloudiness in the central and eastern Pacific), La Niña thresholds have not been met. Climate models and current observations suggest these patterns will not persist. The likelihood of La Niña developing in the coming months is now low, and hence the Bureau’s ENSO Outlook has shifted from La Niña WATCH to INACTIVE.

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) also remains neutral (neither positive nor negative), as is typical at this time of year. When ENSO and the IOD are neutral they have limited impact on Australian climate.

The climate of Australia, and other countries around the tropical Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, has been strongly influenced during the second half of 2016 by both a strong negative IOD in the tropical Indian Ocean (that ended in November) and the weak La Niña-like pattern in the tropical Pacific (which has eased). This combination of climate drivers contributed to Australia observing its wettest May to September on record in 2016.
